Attraction:
Colonial Singapore
Marina Center
Marina Center is a heart of
business as there are new hotels, restaurants, conventions,
shopping centers, and entertainment spots. Marina Center
consists of three sections;
1. Marina Square, opened in
1986
2. Suntec City, opened in 1995
3. Millenia Singapore, the completion of the Marina project in
1997
In 2001, Marina center was
upgraded and extended to the more interesting place as the
Singapore's artistic and cultural hub was introduced for the
next millennium.
Marina Square
In 1986, the district where
Marina Center is based on today was just a cornfield especially
around the city's edge. At that time there were 3 hotels
established but the next decade everything was changed with
prosperity evidenced by those high complexes, shopping center,
Suntec Convention Center commenced to attract huge crowds.
Moreover, other two hotels were constructed; the Ritz Carlton
(1996), and Conrad International (1997). Besides, Marina Square
also houses a 6-screen multiplex cinema and the new construction
of the 8-level Esplanade Mall which provides panoramic views
across Memorial Park to Raffles City.
Suntec City
The 11.7-hectare Suntec City is
the largest commercial development in Singapore. The complex
holds the Suntec International Convention & Exhibition
Center (SICEC) opened in 1995; the 18-story Suntec City Tower;
four 45-story office blocks; the Fountain Terrace Entertainment
Center; and Suntec City Mall. All of these cost over S$2
billion.
Millennia
Singapore
Neighboring to Suntec City lies
the S$2 billion Millenia Singapore project consisted of the
41-story Millenia Tower; the 34-story Centennial Tower; and two
grand hotels (the 610-room Ritz Carlton opened in 1996 and the
509-room Conrad International opened in 1997.) While the
highlight is at Millenia Shoping Mall which its series of 15
asymmetrical pyramids do represent diffused lighting throughout
the day and provide brightening skylights in the evening. These
outstanding constructions and designs belong to the thoughts and
creativities of Philip Johnson, Kevin Roche, and John Burgee.
