Events, performances, art exhibitions, concerts, dance and drama, are often held here in Singapore since the government saw their importance upon Singaporeans to appreciate arts as well as upon economic growth in tourism. Normally, Singapore has already depicted the place where architecture lies in various styles. With this advantage, it is appropriate to say that this country is rich in arts and entertainments.

Event Listings: can be checked in "Straits Times" under "Life" section. Look for "What's on" and you will see lists of art exhibitions, cultural performances, ballet, opera, lectures, or special events with dates and times specified.

Ticket Outlets: can be purchased at the particular venue's box office and at ticket outlets operated by Ticket Charge and Sistic.

Prices: local events are cheap but international touring groups usually charge more due to their transportation expenses.

Venues: major venues are Victoria Concert Hall, Victoria Theatre, Kallang Theatre, the 326-seat Drama Center at Fort Canning Center, the Black Box at Fort Canning Center, Act 3 Theatre at 126 Cairnhill Road, the Substation, Jubilee Hall in the Raffles Hotel, Chinatown's 1,102-seat Kreta Ayer People's Theatre, and the World Trade Center's 1,000-seat auditorium.

Classical Music
Singapore Symphony: erected in 1979 and presently presents over 100 concerts per year. If you're interest, please ask for more details at 331-1230

Singapore Chinese Orchestra: performs traditional Chinese orchestral music. For more information please dial 344-8222

Cultural Performances
Raffles Hotel: daily multimedia show 4 times a day about Raffles and Singapore's history. The show starts at 10.00, 11.00, 12.30, and 13.00. For further details, please dial 331-1732

Singha Inn Restaurant: performs "Instant Asia" nightly. Tel. 345-1111

Tang Dynasty City: enjoy the Chinese lunch and view Chinese dancer and acrobats from 12.00 - 13.00 as the food for your eyes. Tel. 261-1116

Sentosa Island: traditional dance shows are held at the Asian Village's Thai Pavilion 3 times a day at 10.15, 11.15, and 18.30. Tel. 222-9339

Dances
Singapore Dance Theatre: performs classical and temporary dances held at Victoria Theatre, Kallang Theatre, and outdoors at Fort Canning. Tel. 338-0611

Frontier Danceland: a dance mixed by Western technique and Asian themes. It is held at Stamford Art Center, tel. 336-1526

Theatre Arts Troupe: a group that has been promoting Chinese dance for over 20 years. Their performance is held at the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. Tel. 296-2987

Drama
Act 3: a group of people that dedicate their labor of love among youth by performing drama through workshops, productions, and tours. Tel. 734-9090

The Necessary Stage: represents Chinese and English dramas. Plays are staged at the Drama Center on Canning Rise. Tel. 738-6355

Singapore Repertory Theatre: a non-profit theatre company that performs English-language plays. Tel. 221-5585

The Stage Club: established in 1945 by a group of British Army as to perform classical and modern works. Tel. 251-1380, 255-1181

Theater Kami: a Malay drama troupe that always stages Malay-language controversial plays. Tel. 734-3374

TheatreWorks: the very first professional drama company in Singapore that performs plays at Fort Canning Center. Tel. 338-4077

Chinese Opera
Chinese Opera Society: a non-profit art organization that preserves Chinese opera yet in the English-language programs. Tel. 740-1216

Chinese Theatre Circle: presents performances only from April to May. Tel. 221-7464

Kreta Ayer Cantonese Opera Songs and Opera Troupe: known as KACSOT, an all-female group that performs Chinese opera at community centers and homes for senior citizens. Tel. 222-3597
