SHOPPING DISTRICT IN SINGAPORE
Area: Geyland and Katong

Geylang: at the Malay Market, Muslim merchants sell batiks, scarves, curry pots, Indonesian cosmetics, and rice. While the wet market offers fruit, vegetables, fish, poultry, and beef (you can never find pork here due to Islamic religion.)

  • Geylang Serai Malay Cultural Village isn't successful even though Malay goods are sold at reasonable prices.
  • Joo Chiat Complex features several shops selling exotic fabrics, batiks, Persian carpets, and prayer rugs, brass lanterns, and Malay arts and crafts.
  • City Plaza and Tanjong Katong Complex hold shops catering to the Malay ethic community.
  • Haig Road Food Centre is a well-known spot for Malay and Peranakan specialties and Chinese dishes.

Katong: the district that once served as the center of Peranakan culture yet still remains Peranakan houses. The highlight is on Joo Chait Road where curios are sold while the shopping centers like Parkway Parade, Katong Shopping Center work as a commercial core of this district.
