Singapore's nightlife comes to
its life again
Issued: 31 July 2003
From the August 1st, clubbers
will be able to take partying to a higher level. Bar-top dancing
will be legalized as part of an attempt by the authorities to
loosen restrictions on the nightlife scene.
Under the Public Entertainment Act,
dancing at night-spots was limited to designated dance areas. This
exclude bar tops. With "No dancing outside the dance floor
rule", many bars are reported to have been fined for seated
patrons who were shaking their legs.
Lat September, an advisory panel
looked into licensing issues of nightspots. In March, it
recommended that there be no restrictions on dancing, including on
bar-tops. On July 8, police agreed, and lifted the restrictions.
As a result, both employees and customers are free to dance on the
bars.
Now, some bar-owners in the
nightlife areas around Singapore are preparing and reconstructing
their premises to be ready for bar-top dancing. Meanwhile, safety
is also a priority when dancing would be flinging on. Bar counters
have been reinforced with materials like steel and concrete to
withstand the weight of clubbers; railing have also been installed
by the bars fro the safety of the dancers.
Operators see the loosening of
restrictions as a sign that the nightlife industry in Singapore
will be rejuvenated after having been beaten by the Iraqi war and
the Sars outbreak.
