Tourism academy for Singapore
Issued: 28 July 2003
A tourism academy offering hands-on experience for students will
open on Singapore's Sentosa Island in 2005.
The initiation was
made by the Sentosa Leisure Group (formerly known as Sentosa
Development Corporation) cooperating with Tamasek Polytechnic to
create the academy, which will have a joint campus at the
polytechnic in Tampines and on Sentosa, a 500 hectare tourist
destination.
The tourism academy
expects to admit 500 students who will be trained to obtain a
diploma with hands-on experience in either leisure business on the
Sentosa Island, including hotels, spas, restaurants, golf clubs,
sports' facilities, museums, and a theme park. Full and part-time
diploma courses are available for both Singaporean and also
international students.
The creation of the
Tourism Academy is believed to be a fundamental step of the
efforts to develop high service benchmark for the leisure and
hospitality industry in Singapore and the region. Moreover, this
move will also help Singapore fulfill its aim of becoming the
region's educational hub.
Currently, 18 million
people are employed in the tourism industry in Southeast Asia,
140,000 of which are employed in Singapore. With a estimated
growth of 7% over the next ten years in regional tourism demand,
Southeast Asia will see an annual increase of 4% in employment. In
Singapore, a growth of 7% in new employments is expected.
