Singapore's tourism sector
stronger after SARS
Issued: 24 July 2003
Singapore's tourism industry has been in revival after being
hardly hit by the SARS crisis, Singapore Tourism Board said.
It is also said the
decisive actions taken by the government has given the great
benefit to the tourism sector.
Singapore expects
tourist arrivals to return to pre-SARS levels early next years.
Last year, Singapore received 7.6 million visitors, but in the
first half of this year the number tumbled down to just 2.5
million.
However, when the
impact of SARS is fading off, there are good signs of re-budding
travel business in Singapore. In June, average hotel occupancy
rates reached close to 60 percent, compared to 35 percent in May.
In order to boost the
city state's travel industry, the Singapore Tourism Board set for
promotional tourism campaign on two sections, healthcare and
education services. It will also set up more overseas offices to
tap fast-growing markets like China, India and ASEAN countries.
