tourists
Issued: 30 July 2003
Singapore and Australia will join
forces to attract more international visitors.
This dual-destination tourism
partnership is believed to be the first of its kind, aiming that
more Singapore's 7.5 million international tourists can be
encouraged to extend their holiday in Australia.
Singapore is an important aviation
hub for Australia. The Singapore Airlines is the largest overseas
carrier to Australia, bringing 12% of all visitors into the
country.
The Sars which hardly hit Singapore
also affected the number of arrivals to Australia. Many European
and British travelers cancelled holidays to Australia, fearful of
traveling through Asia.
Both countries believe the
partnership will bring about the reciprocal benefit and recover
their respective tourism industry.
Each year, 330,000 mainly European
tourists travel to Australia, according to the Australian Tourist
Commission, and spend one or more nights in Singapore en route,
with Singapore getting about 1 million "same day"
visitors. Singapore is Australia's fifth-biggest source of inbound
visitors.
