Singapore welcomes cruise
ship's return
Issued: 22 July 2003
The return of cruise ship, SuperStar
Virgo, to its homeport in Singapore marks the revival of the
city-state tourism industry.
Similar to the airline in
Singapore, the cruise tourism industry was also battered by the
Sars crisis. The ship which can carry up to 2,000 passengers was
relocated to Australia in April by Malaysian owner Star Cruises as
the region battled to contain the Sars outbreak.
Star Cruises, the world's third biggest cruise operator, suffered
a US$2.2 million loss in the first quarter to March.
As the Sars fear wears off, cruise
holidays see its rebound in Singapore's domestic tourism market,
and the ship's return oversees the return of international
travelers. Moreover, the return is considered as a triumph fro
Singapore which has earned internal complements fro imposing some
of the world's most decisive measures against Sars.
