Singapore to promotes food as
tourist draw

The Singapore Tourism Board raises
food and beverage as one the highlighted attractions of the
city-state by creating of a food and beverage division.
Forming the division will allow
Singapore to "maximize the opportunities available to promote
food and beverage as primary purpose of visit and a key supporting
activity generating tourism receipts for Singapore".
With the limited scenic spots in
Singapore, renowned cuisine of diverse ethnic groups is then
believed to be spotlight of Singapore tourism.
According to the Singapore Tourism Board, it is found that
visitors devote more than 13% of their expenses in multi-cultural
Singapore on food, equivalent to some 400 million US dollars in
annual revenues for the industry.
The Singapore's main culinary
influences are Chinese, Malay, and Indian. Western cuisine is also
well represented.
The board's new food and beverage
division will oversee all development and marketing work for the
sector as part of tourism promotion.
The project is part of re-boosting
the travel industry after being hardly hit by the Sars epidemic in
the region between March and May.
