Singapore to promotes food as tourist draw

Issued: 23 July 2003

The Singapore Tourism Board raises food and beverage as one the highlighted attractions of the city-state by creating of a food and beverage division.

Forming the division will allow Singapore to "maximize the opportunities available to promote food and beverage as primary purpose of visit and a key supporting activity generating tourism receipts for Singapore".

With the limited scenic spots in Singapore, renowned cuisine of diverse ethnic groups is then believed to be spotlight of Singapore tourism.
According to the Singapore Tourism Board, it is found that visitors devote more than 13% of their expenses in multi-cultural Singapore on food, equivalent to some 400 million US dollars in annual revenues for the industry.

The Singapore's main culinary influences are Chinese, Malay, and Indian. Western cuisine is also well represented.

The board's new food and beverage division will oversee all development and marketing work for the sector as part of tourism promotion.

The project is part of re-boosting the travel industry after being hardly hit by the Sars epidemic in the region between March and May.
